Abstract

Kazuo Ishiguro is a celebrated contemporary novelist whose fiction is often classified as literary realism. However, several of his texts, especially The Buried Giant and Never Let Me Go, incorporate narrative mechanisms usually associated with the fantasy genre. This article investigates the presence and function of fantasy elements in Ishiguro’s novels and argues that these elements—far from being superficial—serve to deepen thematic concerns such as memory, identity, and history.
