The small intestine is one of the most functionally active organs of the digestive system, especially with regard to the absorption of nutrients. In order to create an experimental model of cholecystectomy in animals of the experimental group, cholecystectomy (removal of the gallbladder) was performed surgically. In this study, we decided to examine what morphofunctional changes are caused by the removal of the gallbladder (cholecystectomy) in the wall of the small intestine, in particular in the area of the ileum. Analysis of the morphometric data confirms the activation of the regenerative potential of the small intestine. The obtained results can be used as objective criteria confirming that the absence of the gallbladder’s reservoir function after its removal contributes to the development of pathological changes in the wall of the small intestine.
