Abstract

In modern language education, assessment plays a significant role in measuring learners’ progress and improving the quality of teaching and learning. In language learning classrooms, formative and summative assessment are considered two essential approaches that help teachers evaluate students’ language proficiency and academic achievement. Formative assessment focuses on monitoring students’ learning process through continuous feedback, classroom activities, quizzes, peer assessment, and teacher observation, while summative assessment evaluates learners’ overall performance at the end of a course, semester, or program through final exams, projects, and standardized tests. This study aims to compare formative and summative assessment in language learning and analyze their impact on students’ motivation, participation, and language development based on scientific sources. The findings of the study reveal that formative assessment encourages active participation, increases learner motivation, reduces anxiety, and helps students identify their strengths and weaknesses during the learning process. In contrast, summative assessment provides measurable results and determines students’ final achievement levels, but it may create pressure and focus mainly on outcomes rather than learning progress. The study also shows that combining formative and summative assessment methods can improve teaching effectiveness and support balanced language development. Furthermore, learner-centered assessment strategies, constructive feedback, self-assessment, and technology-supported evaluation techniques contribute to enhancing students’ confidence and communicative competence. Overall, the effective use of formative and summative assessment in language learning helps improve students’ academic performance, language proficiency, and long-term learning outcomes.
