Abstract

The modern concept of inflammatory periodontal diseases has been formed at the intersection of classical infectious theories, immunology, vascular pathophysiology, and clinical dentistry. Even historical sources, such as the Ebers Papyrus, described clinical manifestations that are now interpreted as gingivitis and periodontitis, which allows us to speak of the centuries-long history of this pathology. Subsequently, in the works of European clinicians of the 19th and early 20th centuries, attempts were made to systematize the causes of periodontal diseases, emphasizing their multifactorial nature; in Russian-language literature, this approach is analyzed in detail in modern reviews on the etiopathogenesis of periodontitis
