THE POETICS OF NAMING ANIMALS IN UZBEK AND AMERICAN PROSE AND THE LITERARY FUNCTION OF ZOONYMS
Keywords:
poetics of naming, zoonym, proper name, generic term, designation through ownership, comparative analysis, literary functionAbstract
The article offers a comparative analysis of the poetics of naming animals in Uzbek and American prose. Four forms of naming are distinguished: the proper name, the name derived from a feature, the designation through ownership and the restriction to the generic term. Each form is illustrated by passages drawn from both bodies of material. The analysis substantiates that the direction of naming in the two corpora is opposite: in the Uzbek material the name performs a function of bringing closer, whereas in the American material it performs a function of separation.
