Abstract

This article examines the representation of proper names in English-Uzbek bilingual dictionaries and analyzes the linguistic, cultural, and lexicographic challenges related to their translation and interpretation. The study explores the structural, semantic, and phonetic features of anthroponyms, toponyms, ethnonyms, and other categories of proper nouns within bilingual lexicography. Special attention is devoted to transliteration, translation, phonetic adaptation, and the preservation of cultural meaning in dictionary entries. The research highlights the differences between English and Uzbek naming traditions, emphasizing the influence of historical, religious, and sociocultural factors on proper-name formation and usage. The article also investigates the treatment of phraseological units containing proper names and evaluates the role of explanatory notes and phonetic transcription in improving user comprehension. The findings demonstrate that culturally informed and linguistically accurate representation of proper names significantly enhances bilingual communication, translation quality, and intercultural understanding in modern lexicographic practice.
