Esophageal tumors: Benign and malignant tumors. Benign tumors of the esophagus are rare. Esophageal cancer can start in the mucus-producing tissues or in certain cells that line the esophagus. You may not have symptoms in the early stages. If so, you may have difficulty swallowing, weight loss, or a persistent heartburn or hoarseness. Surgery and other treatments can treat this condition.
