The growing global demand for sustainable energy systems has intensified research on energy-efficient materials capable of reducing energy losses, enhancing performance, and improving lifecycle sustainability. Energy efficiency in materials engineering encompasses thermal management materials, lightweight structural alloys, advanced coatings, energy storage materials, and high-temperature systems used in renewable and conventional energy sectors. Despite substantial progress, significant challenges remain in balancing mechanical performance, thermal stability, environmental resistance, cost-effectiveness, and recyclability.
This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the fundamental material challenges limiting energy efficiency across multiple sectors, including power generation, aerospace, transportation, and renewable energy systems. Microstructural engineering strategies such as grain refinement, phase stabilization, nano-precipitation strengthening, and defect control are discussed. Emerging solutions including advanced composites, thermal barrier coatings, high-entropy alloys, and additive manufacturing are evaluated. The integration of digital materials design and artificial intelligence in alloy development is also reviewed. The study concludes by identifying research directions necessary to achieve next-generation energy-efficient material systems[1].
