Abstract

This paper examines the pragmatic characteristics of apologies in the English language. Apologies are an important type of speech act that helps speakers maintain social harmony and repair interpersonal relationships. The study focuses on the linguistic forms, communicative functions, and politeness strategies used in English apologies. Particular attention is given to how speakers express regret, accept responsibility, and restore social balance through apologetic expressions.

The analysis demonstrates that English apologies are typically direct, concise, and oriented toward individual responsibility. Common expressions such as “I'm sorry,” “I apologize,” and “Excuse me” are widely used in both formal and informal contexts. The findings contribute to a better understanding of pragmatic competence and intercultural communication.
