Abstract

Calculous cholecystitis may cause structural and functional alterations in the liver, including impaired hepatocyte polarity and membrane transport, which may contribute to intrahepatic cholestasis. ABCB11 (bile salt export pump, BSEP) mediates ATP-dependent canalicular export of bile acids, whereas SLCO1B3 (organic anion transporting polypeptide 1B3, OATP1B3) is involved in sinusoidal uptake of organic anions[1-5]. The aim of this study was to comparatively assess the expression of these transporters and the structural organization of the bile canalicular system in experimental calculous cholecystitis.
