This article examines how idiomatic expressions (idioms) function across different communicative contexts — everyday conversation, business discourse, cross-cultural communication, literary and written texts. It argues that idioms are not fixed semantic units but are dynamically shaped by context, pragmatics, speaker’s intention, and cultural background. Drawing on empirical studies from psycholinguistics, pragmatics, corpus linguistics, and cross-cultural phraseology, the paper demonstrates that idiom comprehension and usage vary in terms of meaning (literal vs. figurative), frequency, stylistic load, and communicative effect depending on context. Examples of idioms from English (and other languages for comparative insight) illustrate how context influences interpretation, acceptability, and pragmatic function. The analysis underlines the necessity of contextual awareness and cultural competence in idiom use, with implications for language teaching, translation, and cross-cultural communication.
