THE SEMANTIC ARCHITECTURE AND CULTURAL REFLECTIONS OF PROVERBS IN ENGLISH AND UZBEK

Abstract

This study explores the semantic dimensions and cultural manifestations within the paremiological funds of the English and Uzbek languages. Proverbs, as condensed repositories of folk wisdom, do more than transmit moral dictums; they serve as cognitive maps that reflect a nation’s historical trajectory, philosophical values, social structures, and domestic habits. By employing a comparative semantic and linguacultural approach, this article examines how everyday concepts are elevated to philosophical truths in both languages. The findings reveal that while universal human experiences generate parallel semantic fields, the underlying cultural reflections diverge significantly. English proverbs predominantly mirror Western individualism, mercantile history, and empirical pragmatism. In contrast, Uzbek proverbs are deeply embedded in an Eastern collectivistic matrix, characterized by agrarian lifestyle metaphors, generational hierarchy, and spiritual-ethical purity.
