Abstract

The progressive institutionalisation of international adjudication throughout the twentieth and twenty-first centuries has generated a complex architecture of international courts and tribunals endowed with binding jurisdiction over inter-state disputes, international criminal responsibility, and the interpretation of multilateral treaty regimes. Nevertheless, the conferral of adjudicative competence upon these bodies has not been accompanied by a commensurate coercive enforcement mechanism.
