AVIATION TERMINOLOGY AS A STRUCTURED CONCEPTUAL SYSTEM IN LANGUAGE FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES

In aviation, professional communication is inseparable from safety, which places exceptional demands on linguistic accuracy and conceptual clarity. This paper approaches aviation terminology not as a random set of technical labels but as a conceptually structured system functioning within the framework of Language for Specific Purposes (LSP). Relying on principles of terminological theory and LSP research, the study examines how aviation terms are organized through conceptual hierarchies, functional interrelations, and regulatory constraints. A descriptive and analytical methodology is employed, supported by examples drawn from international aviation documentation and operational discourse. The analysis focuses on the relationship between terms and concepts, the role of standardization in stabilizing meaning, and the functional importance of semantic restriction in safety-critical contexts. It is argued that the effectiveness of aviation communication largely depends on the internal coherence of its terminological system, which enables consistency and predictability in multilingual professional environments. The paper contributes to LSP studies by demonstrating that aviation terminology constitutes an integrated conceptual framework shaped by linguistic, technological, and institutional factors, with direct implications for professional practice, translation, and training.
