Abstract

This paper examines the pedagogical and assessment implications of taking students’ social factors into account in English language learning. Grounded in sociolinguistic and applied linguistics perspectives, the study explores how socioeconomic status, language proficiency, gender, and ethnicity shape learners’ classroom participation and assessment performance. Focusing on two student subgroups—socioeconomically privileged female students and rural students with low English proficiency—the paper argues that affective barriers, unequal access to linguistic resources, and identity-related norms significantly influence learning outcomes. Drawing on prior research, it proposes inclusive pedagogical practices such as safe participation structures, differentiated instruction with scaffolding, translanguaging strategies, and culturally responsive assessment accommodations. These implications aim to promote learner agency, reduce anxiety, and support more equitable language education in multilingual and international contexts.
