This article provides detailed information on the personality and scholarly activity of Abu Hafs Umar Suhrawardi, one of the prominent Sufi shaykhs of the medieval period, the Suhrawardiyya order founded by him, and his son Shaykh Zayniddin Bobo. The Suhrawardiyya Sufi order emerged in Iraq, in the region between the two rivers, during the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries within the framework of an ascetic school. According to tradition, it was the first organized Sufi brotherhood in the history of Muslim asceticism and followed a strongly Sunni orientation within the Shafi‘i school.
