SYNONYMY AND ANTONYMY IN UZBEK AND ENGLISH PROVERBS

Abstract

Proverbs are an important part of a nation's linguistic and cultural heritage. They embody collective wisdom, social norms, and moral values accumulated over centuries. This article examines the phenomena of synonymy and antonymy in Uzbek and English proverbs from a comparative perspective. The study analyzes how similar and opposite meanings are expressed through paremiological units in both languages and explores their semantic, stylistic, and cultural functions. The findings reveal that synonymic and antonymic relationships contribute significantly to the richness of proverbial language and reflect both universal human experiences and culture-specific perspectives.
