INTERPRETATION OF OF PROVERBS AND SAYINGS AND THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THEM

Abstract

This article examines the linguistic interpretation of proverbs and sayings, two important categories of paremiological units. Although these concepts are closely related and are often used interchangeably in everyday communication, they possess distinct structural, semantic, and pragmatic characteristics. The study analyzes the views of prominent linguists and folklorists concerning the nature of proverbs and sayings and identifies the main criteria for distinguishing between them. The findings demonstrate that proverbs express complete judgments and moral conclusions, whereas sayings function as figurative expressions that do not necessarily convey a complete thought.
