Abstract

The communicative approach has become one of the most influential methodologies in English language teaching, emphasizing the development of learners’ ability to use language effectively in real-life situations. Unlike traditional grammar-based methods, this approach prioritizes meaningful interaction, authentic communication, and the practical use of language functions. Planning lessons within this framework requires teachers to clearly define communicative objectives, design tasks that promote student interaction, and create a supportive environment where learners feel confident expressing their ideas. As a result, lesson planning is not limited to the selection of linguistic content, but also involves structuring activities that encourage collaboration, negotiation of meaning, and active participation.

Effective lesson planning using the communicative approach involves the integration of task-based activities, authentic materials, and learner-centered strategies. Teachers must carefully sequence activities from controlled practice to freer communication, ensuring that each stage contributes to the development of communicative competence. For instance, role-plays, discussions, and problem-solving tasks allow students to apply language in realistic contexts, thereby increasing both fluency and motivation. However, implementing this approach also presents challenges, including time constraints, classroom management issues, and difficulties in assessing communicative outcomes. Despite these challenges, research and classroom practice indicate that well-planned communicative lessons significantly enhance students’ engagement and overall language proficiency.
