MODERNIZATION OF DENTAL REHABILITATION TECHNIQUES IN CANCER SURVIVORS AFTER RADIATION THERAPY

Radiation therapy is widely used in the treatment of head and neck cancer; however, it often causes severe complications in the oral cavity, including radiation caries, mucositis, xerostomia, osteoradionecrosis, and soft tissue atrophy. These conditions significantly impair oral functions and reduce patients’ quality of life, making dental rehabilitation particularly challenging.
The aim of this study was to optimize dental rehabilitation methods in cancer patients after radiation therapy through the development of improved diagnostic, preventive, and therapeutic approaches. Clinical and laboratory examinations were conducted in more than 120 oncology patients aged 25–55 years before and after radiation therapy. The prevalence and intensity of dental complications, changes in hard and soft oral tissues, and alterations in the oral microbiome were evaluated.The findings revealed a significant correlation between radiation dose, vascular changes, and the development of osteoradionecrosis. Based on these results, an individualized rehabilitation algorithm was developed, incorporating personalized oral hygiene programs, pharmacological protection of oral tissues, and the use of innovative biomaterials. Implementation of the proposed approach demonstrated improved functional outcomes and reduced post-radiation complications.
