Abstract

X-ray diffraction analysis of modified Azkamar (AB) and Krantau (KB) bentonites intercalated with tetraheptylammonium bromide (THAB) confirmed successful expansion of the interlayer spacing. The montmorillonite (001) peak shifted from 12.48 Å to 18.32 Å in AB and from 12.36 Å to 18.59 Å in KB, indicating effective insertion of organic cations into the clay galleries. The modified samples showed improved structural ordering and reduced amorphous content, with AB demonstrating higher structural stability. The results verify the formation of organophilic bentonites suitable for adsorption applications.
