DISTINCTIVE CHARACTERISTICS OF SPORTS TERMINOLOGY IN ENGLISH AND UZBEK LANGUAGES

Abstract

This article examines the distinctive linguistic features of sports terminology in English and Uzbek languages from a comparative and theoretical perspective. It analyzes the concept of “term”, terminological systems, and the sports conceptosphere, drawing on definitions from explanatory dictionaries and the works of leading linguists. The study classifies sports terminology into three main categories: general sports vocabulary, shared sports terms, and domain-specific terms, and discusses the structural components of the sports terminological system. Special attention is paid to the isomorphic and allomorphic features of term formation in both languages, particularly in morphological processes such as suffixation and compounding, as well as differences arising from the analytical nature of English and the synthetic structure of Uzbek. The research highlights the dynamic development of sports terminology and emphasizes the need for its ongoing standardization and linguistic analysis.
