VALENCY POTENTIAL OF CERTAIN VERBS

Abstract

This article examines the valency potential of certain groups of Uzbek verbs, with particular emphasis on verbs of perception. It argues that the combinatorial possibilities of these verbs are determined by their semantic content, which governs whether they can co-occur with other lexical units. The study demonstrates that, besides functioning as lexical units exhibiting the characteristics of both word and sentence expanders, these verbs may also give rise to intermediate syntactic structures. The analysis is carried out within the framework of contemporary valency theory.
