Abstract

Hearing loss is one of the most widespread pathologies globally, and its prevalence is closely associated with age, gender, socioeconomic status, and environmental factors. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), one in five people worldwide experiences some degree of hearing impairment. This article provides a detailed overview of the characteristics of hearing loss in both children and the elderly, covering congenital and acquired forms of deafness, the impact of industrial environments, high-frequency noise exposure, infections, ototoxic medications, and other risk factors. Additionally, the article highlights the negative effects of hearing loss on work capacity among the working-age population, the challenges of rehabilitation, and the increased burden on healthcare systems.
