Abstract

The study examines the structural models of term formation in the Russian language using the terminology of international relations as empirical material. The research focuses on identifying the most productive structural patterns and word-formation mechanisms employed in the creation of specialized terms. The corpus consists of 40 Russian-language terms selected from official diplomatic documents, legal acts, and media sources published between 2006 and 2026. The analysis reveals the predominance of two-component terminological constructions, which account for half of the examined units, while three-component and multi-component terms demonstrate a high degree of specificity and conceptual precision. Particular attention is paid to the role of analytical nomination, direct borrowing, calquing, affixation, and hybrid formation models in the development of Russian terminology. Examples such as “strategic partnership”, “international security”, “arms control”, and “memorandum of understanding” illustrate the structural diversity of contemporary terminological units. The findings indicate that the Russian language tends to employ extended syntactic constructions to express complex international concepts, which distinguishes it from the more compact agglutinative models found in Turkic languages. The study contributes to the understanding of structural organization in specialized vocabulary and highlights the interaction between linguistic typology and terminological development.
