The translation of historical texts presents unique linguistic, cultural, and pragmatic challenges that extend beyond the transfer of lexical meaning. One of the key criteria for assessing translation quality is functional equivalence, which emphasizes preserving the communicative purpose and historical significance of the source text rather than merely reproducing its linguistic form. This study investigates functional equivalence in the English translation of The Institutes of Timur, focusing on the rendering of historical proper names, military terminology, ethnonyms, administrative titles, and culture-specific expressions. The research employs comparative, descriptive, functional, and pragmatic methods to evaluate the extent to which the English translation reproduces the historical, cultural, and communicative functions of the original text.
